Kathrin Romary Beckinsale was born in London on July 26, 1973. She is the only child of actors Richard Beckinsale and Judy Loe. She is 5'7" (170 cm) tall.
At the age of four, she made her first television appearance on an episode of This is Your Life dedicated to her father (a year prior to his untimely death). Her major acting debut was a 1991 TV film about World War II called One Against the Wind.
Kate began attending Oxford University's New College in the fall of 1991, majoring in French and Russian literature. She had already decided that she wanted to act, but to broaden her horizons she chose university over drama school. While in her first year at Oxford, Kate received her big break in Kenneth Branagh's film adaptation of William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. Kate worked on three other films while attending Oxford: the 1994 historical drama Royal Deceit, the 1994 mystery drama Uncovered, and the 1995 satirical film Cold Comfort Farm.
After college, Kate jumped around several genres, including an adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma, crime comedy Shooting Fish, historical dramedy The Last Days of Disco, and the much-maligned Pearl Harbor.
In 1999, Kate gave birth to a daughter, Lily Mo Sheen, with her future Underworld co-star and romantic partner, Michael Sheen.
Kate cemented her status as a female action star as the now-iconic vampire assassin Selene in 2003's Underworld, which spawned three sequels and one prequel.
During the filming of Underworld, Kate and Michael separated, and she began a relationship with director Len Wiseman. The two were married in July 2004 and remained married into 2015 when the pair announced they had grown apart. They divorced in 2016.
